Word press posts:

Word Press post #1-DU Stories

During my first week back at DU after winter break & abroad I spent time with friends, ate delicious food, moved in and furnished a house, and got reaclimated to DU classes. I was able to interview some students about what they were most looking forward to about being back at DU.  I also got the chance to talk to a Professor at DU about the role social media plays in our society.

Word Press post #2-#DUreporters 1

Twitter grants us access to breaking stories and keeps us updated in a matter of seconds.  Some of the big stories that came across my feed that week ranged from Obama talking about gun control to the winter storm that hit the East Coast.  Regardless, Twitter has revolutionized how and when we get our news, and the way we interact with it. The news articles that I focused on the most were the ones that were the most relevant to my interests and the ones that I like to keep up with.

Word Press post #3-Twitter Paper

Twitter has many different facets; social, comedic (parody accounts), news accounts, celebrity accounts, there is even an account dedicated to the vegetable kale.  As a generation grows older they see firsthand the transformation from a social platform to a site that can be used to stay engaged and up-to-date on current issues.  It is a platform where the users can use their voice and communicate directly with others and remain up to date on certain issues immediately.

Word Press post #4-#DUreporters 2

The news stories that were running across my feed for this week were extremely interesting.  There was a recent discovering of an ancient queen of Egypt’s tomb and remains that scientists were researching to see if there was a correlation between her death and the changing climate at the time.  Also in the news a boss in Italy sexually harassed a female worker and charged as not guilty, Gucci was breaking new ground by hosting their 2017 resort collection at Westminster Abbey in London, something that’s never been done before, a Stanford student was addressing the issue of rape, and AirBnB was under fire in London.

Word Press post #5-#DUreporters 3

Australian scientists have designed a tiny paperclip sized mind-controlled device that could allow paralyzed patients to walk again.  New York Fashion Week also kicked off this week and Twitter was overflowing with posts about the various shows.  The 3rd season of Broad City also premiered this week.  On a more negative note there has been an outbreak in bed bugs in hotels in NYC.

Word Press post #6-#DUreporters 4

In this weeks Twitter-sphere a lot of content was circulating about the Oscar’s winners, especially Leonardo DiCaprio’s win as best male actor for his part in The Revenant.  Starbucks has also sealed the deal on opening up a store in Milan, the espresso capital of the world, which has been something Howard Schultz (the chairman & chief executive) has been working on for a while.  In the architectural world there are plans for a glass slide to be built on the 69th floor of the U.S Bank Tower in Los Angeles.  Also in the realm of technology, Microsoft has set a date for the release of their HoloLens, a mixed reality headset that incorporates holographic images into the wearers environment.

Event Story

I decided to go to the DU Sustainability Council’s monthly meeting for my event story.  The council was made up of mostly professors at the University of Denver and some undergraduate students as well.  There was one undergraduate student there who was part of Divest, DU’s undergraduate sustainability club.

Localizing a National Story

It’s 2016 and equal pay for woman still isn’t a reality in Colorado, let alone the United States.  In Colorado women are making roughly $762 a week compared to the $978 men are makingWhile the average woman in Colorado is making more than the average female does in the United States, she still sees a significantly smaller salary than a man.
